Tessar Lo, a Chinese-Indonesian Canadian artist, will host his first solo exhibition "tangere" in Asia, drawing viewers into a liminal, ethereal interiority in ongoing flux. Lo invites viewers to enter a private realm of consciousness, wandering and inadvertently catching glimpses of an intertidal zone that morphs from a room to an unbounded metaphysical space and back, all against the backdrop of a perpetual late evening cycle.“tangere” is an exploration of the fluid nature of existence, and true of its Latin meaning- meant for a poetic journey into the heart of perception.
Tessar Lo is a Chinese-Indonesian Canadian artist born in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1984. He received his BAA at Sheridan College in 2007 and currently resides in Toronto. His works have previously been shown in Canada, Paris, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Tokyo and the United State. He has also participated in events hosted by institutions such as the Los Angeles Japanese American National Museum, Gardiner Museum, and Art Gallery of Ontario. Lo grew up immersed in various cultures. His practice is an ongoing dialogue seeking to bridge him and his experiences from these environments. He employs various materials and media, reassembling new and old iconography of popular culture, presenting his work with prominent marks, colors, and textures. Lo uses everyday mundane objects as elements in his works to create humorous and mysterious, focusing on exploring the internal deconstruction. Removing the abstruseness of art, he uses simple mediums and themes to initiate lengthy conversations with the works.
In this solo exhibition, through the interplay of drawing, painting, and a thoughtfully curated site-specific installation, Tessar Lo presents a rich tapestry of synthesized imagery akin to multiple exposure photographs. The forms that blur the boundaries between definition and abstraction propose a state like that of déjà vu.“tangere” invites contemplation of the mutable nature of reality and the intricate factors that shape our ever-shifting understanding of what we believe.
The exhibition will open at 3 PM on November 11. We hope that viewers can fully immerse themselves in the show!
